A Historical Look at Firearms of the Civil War

The War Between the States, also known as the American Civil War was fought from 1861 to 1865 entirely on United States soil. What makes this was extraordinary was the fact that it was contested by citizens of the same country. This was a war that separated family, neighbors and friends who were on different sides of the conflict. It was also a war that resulted in over 750,000 soldier and civilian casualties.

One of the reasons for the high number of casualties over the four year time frame was the improvements in the firearms that were used by the North and the South. There were many improvements over the firearms that were used in the late 1700's and early 1800's. The improvements were in the rifles, pistols and ammo that was created and used. With the improvements, soldiers were now able to load their weapons quicker and they were more accurate to fire.
